Thursday's box office estimates are in for the top 10. At the moment we only have figures for those films, and The Twilight Saga: New Moon has now dropped out of the top 10, but results for Avatar are interesting. The film took in an estimated $14.9M on New Year's Eve. This gives it an estimated total for 2009 of $283,811,000. New Moon (not counting Thursday) is at $283,897,000. The difference is only $86K.
If these numbers hold, Avatar will finish in 5th place for the year and will not be able to knock New Moon out of 4th place as many had predicted. These are only estimates, not final numbers. We will have to wait for next week to see how this pans out.
